Betty Jo Brown

November 9, 1927 — March 24, 2025

Amarillo

Betty Jo (Brewster) Brown, 97, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away on March 24, 2025, just two months after her loving husband, Don. The youngest of eight children, Betty grew up in the small community of Mobeetie, Texas. After high school, she moved to Wheeler, where she worked as a clerk in the County Courthouse, and then to Amarillo in 1950 to work for an insurance company. It was in Amarillo that Betty met and married Don Eugene Brown in 1964. They spent over 60 years together. She was a devoted wife, homemaker, and mother of two children.

Known for her no-nonsense approach to life and relationships, Betty showed care in her own way. She made meals for the sick and shut-in, cared for the neighbors, and never hesitated to step up when her church or community called. Betty engaged in BSF Bible studies up until her passing. She was a faithful believer in God, and her faith guided her through the many seasons of her life.

Don and Betty shared many adventures, but their favorite pastime was driving to bluegrass festivals all over the Southwest. Music was an integral part of life in the Brown household. Betty was active in her children’s school years, serving as a homeroom mother and spearheading fundraising events. Even after her children had graduated, she remained a loyal supporter of Palo Duro High School football, rarely missing a game on the radio. Her backyard grapevine yielded countless jars of homemade jelly—perhaps a perfect metaphor for Betty herself: sometimes a little tart, but always something to be remembered. This was a perfect match for Don’s homemade sourdough bread, creating a combination as complementary as their partnership.

Betty leaves behind a legacy of resilience, commitment, and a life lived on her own terms. She is survived by her children, Cliff Brown and Carolyn Dobson, and grandchildren, Isaac Brown, Hannah Brown, Haven Brown, Cadence Dobson, and Colter Dobson. A service to remember her life will be held at Selah Event Center, 3310 Wimberly Rd., Amarillo, TX, on April 8, 2025, at 1:30 PM, where those who knew her can share stories, a cup of black coffee, and maybe even a jar of jelly. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount, Blvd, Amarillo, Texas.
