Viola Aline Payne was born Nov. 5, 1918 in Clovis, New Mexico.  She was the oldest of five daughters born to Henry and Mattie Payne.  After graduating from Clovis High School at the age of 16, she moved to Amarillo to work as a PBX operator for the Santa Fe Railroad.  While working shift work she attended Draughn’s Business College, taking typing, shorthand and other business classes to increase her chances of getting a day job as a secretary.  As the result of her hard work she retired in 1965 as an executive secretary.
In 1956, she married Jack Cook, another Santa Fe employee who had lost his spouse.  She acquired three stepsons, Tommy, Kenneth and Jerry.  Jack passed away in 1959, four days after their third anniversary.
She later married Ray Minner in 1965 and traveled with him to his work conventions and with functions of the Khiva Temple.  Ray passed away in 1989.
She was preceded in death by her four sisters, Dean, Faye, Lena Mae and Margaret; and her stepson, Tommy.
She volunteered at West Amarillo Christian Church and Paramount Terrace, now Hillside, calling the prayer chain, working funeral meals, and teaching the Berean Circle.  She also held offices in the Twentieth Century Culture Club and was an active volunteer at Northwest Texas Hospital Auxiliary.  She also has maintained her membership in AVIHK Temple NO. 70 (Daughter’s of the Nile).
During her retirement she enjoyed oil painting, cross-stitching and needlepoint.  Many of her paintings are being enjoyed by friends and family.
Survivors include stepsons, Kenneth Cook of Katy and Jerry Cook and wife Judy of Amarillo; a stepdaughter-in-law, Joyce Cook of Schulenburg; four granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; three nieces; and four nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Ware Memorial Center, Harrington Assisted Living since her arrival in August 2009.
The family suggests memorials be to Presbyterian Home for Children, 3400 Bowie, Amarillo, TX 79109.
